Hydrology is the science that studies the spatial and temporal distribution and the properties of water available in the atmosphere and in the earth's crust (rainfall, runoff, soil moisture, evapotranspiration, etc.). On the other hand, Hydrogeology is the branch of hydrology that studies groundwater.

The lifestyle to which we have become accustomed depends, to a great extent, on the availability of enough clean and cheap water and a safe disposal system for waste water.

Nature limits the amount of water available for human use. Although there is enough water on the planet, it is not always at the right place and time. In addition, there is evidence that chemical waste improperly disposed of in the past is now appearing in water sources.

We are currently facing very high consumption, uncertain supplies, and increased demands for protection against floods and pollution. The effects of the shortage of clean water on the economy and health are worrying. Hydrology has developed as a science in response to the need to understand the complex water system of the Earth and help to solve water problems.

Nowadays, hydrology has a very important role in the planning of the hydraulic resources use. Besides, it has become a fundamental part of the engineering projects related to water supply, disposal of waste water, drainage, protection against the action of rivers and recreation.
