8.4.- FLOW VISUALIZATION
The flow of fluids belongs to the branch of fluid dynamics. The studies focus on understanding the motion of fluids, determined by Newton's laws, the laws of conservation of mass and energy and other laws, such as the Stokes, the Reynolds number or Prandt, among others.
View moreThe fluid motion and direction visualization thanks to the stream lines and flow lines makes it possible to know velocity and pressure distributions. A streamline is always parallel to the velocity and a flow line is the path of the fluid, both types of lines coincide in steady state.
The fluids can be considered compressible (gases) or incompressible (liquid). These fluids, according to their nature and the forces to which they are subjected, can have laminar or turbulent flow inside pipes, channels, turbomachines, etc. The laminar flow occurs when the fluid shows a slow and orderly movement and the sheets of fluid slide smoothly in parallel. In contrast, in the turbulent flow movement is more energetic, irregular and unpredictable.
At present, the flow of fluids is an important field because of the impact it has on the dimensioning of industrial equipment, in civil constructions, such as canals, or the knowledge that contributes to the pressure drops suffered by fluids in motion.
