재료 공학은 재료 과학에 대한 산업적 해석을 수행하는 과학 산업 분야입니다. 인류 학적으로 인간 발달의 여러 단계는 도구 제조에 사용되는 재료 (석기 시대, 청동기 시대 등)에 따라 분류되었습니다. 따라서 인류의 발전은 신소재 연구와 밀접한 관련이 있습니다.

지난 200 년 동안 재료에 대한 발견은 재료의 특성과 구조 사이의 관계를 보여준 Gibbs의 공헌만큼 드러났습니다. 이를 통해 그래 핀과 같은 새로운 물질의 개발과 나노 물질 또는 나노 기술과 같은 새로운 분야의 연구가 가능해졌습니다.
