化学反应器是一种可以进行化学反应的设备。这意味着引入材料的化学成分在反应器内发生了变化。

它们的设计是为了获得最佳的转换性和选择性，最好的效果。它们可能含有一种催化剂，一种能改善反应动力学的化合物，这取决于要进行的反应。如果这个催化剂是一种纯化的酶或含有酶的生物体，那么我们就说生物反应器。

反应器有几种分类：取决于相的数量（均质和异质）、热力机制（等温或绝热）和操作类型（分批、连续或流动和半连续）。根据作业类型的不同。

  • 连续。搅拌罐/完全混合（CSTR），管式反应器/活塞流。
  • 不连续的。搅拌罐（批）。

根据相数。

  • 同质的。单相。固定床、移动床、流化床等。
  • 异质的。几个阶段： 它们可以是催化或非催化的。固定床和流化床是催化异质反应器最常见的例子。

这是最常见的反应器，不过还有很多其他的反应器，如串联式组合反应器、酶催化反应器、再循环反应器等。

由于技术的进步，通过过程模拟系统研究化学反应的动力学和设计反应器成为可能。在工艺控制方面也有进步，以解决化学工业中的某些问题，同时也要遵守环境限制。

与关心环境相联系，化学工业一直在调整和研究符合环境约束条件、更优化的新材料、催化剂等。
