电机是能够将任何形式的能量转化为电能的设备，反之亦然。它们主要分为三类：发电机、电动机和变压器。

发电机将机械能转化为电能，而电动机将电能转化为机械能。而电动机又分为直流电动机和交流电动机。与以往不同的是，变压器节约的是同一种能量，变换的只是电压等级。

电机的运行是基于电磁学原理。

第一台机电发电机是法拉第根据电磁感应现象制造的。一段时间后，安培研制出了第一台永磁发电机。但正是伽利略-费拉里斯迈出了最后一步，发现了旋转磁场。

电机的一个重要方面是用于控制电机的驱动类型。如今，使用变频器和PLC对鼠笼式感应电机、伺服电机、直流电机等进行高级控制已经非常普遍。变频器可以精确控制这些机器的扭矩和转速。它们有不同类型的保护，如过流和过载保护。此外，变频器通常具有数字信号和模拟信号，用于涉及相应电动机的不同过程的自动化。比较经济简单的是电动机的电子启动器。这种驱动装置通过将启动瞬时电流降至最低，实现了大功率电动机的启动。其他比较传统的驱动装置，但因其成本低，仍在使用的是手动星三角启动器。星三角起动器可以降低鼠笼式电机的起动电流，减少对市电的干扰和瞬时不平衡。
