传统的发电、输电、配电和能源消费的电力系统结构已经不能满足日益增长的能源需求。智能电网 "的概念源于将可再生能源与电信系统结合在一起,通过智能电表可以实时了解能源需求。智能电表是双向电能表,它有一个通信系统,电力公司通过它随时了解终端用户的用电情况。为此,在改造中心安装数据集中器,通过PLC(电力线通信)与连接在同一网络上的智能电表进行通信。所有关于用户的用电信息都从智能电表传输到数据集中器,再通过GPRS通过不同的通信系统传输到电力公司。

由于可再生能源的扩散和建立更高效、更灵活的电力系统的需要,分散式发电已成为现实。这就是微网概念的由来。这是一种双向发电系统,利用数字技术将电力从各个发电点分配给用户,并有利于可再生能源的整合。但是,大量的发电源共存,会给网络带来一些问题。其一是实现电网中电力流的优化分配。为了解决这一问题,采用不同的技术对电力流进行智能控制。这些最新一代的设备有移相变压器(PST)、柔性交流输电系统(FACTS)、静态同步补偿器(STATCOM)、晶闸管控制串联电容器(TCSC)和静态变频器(SFC)等,这些技术被安装在某些变电站中,以控制电网中的功率流量以及电网的功率因数,从而使整个电力系统的性能得到大幅提高。

得益于这种技术的发展,催生了微网络,使风能和光伏等可再生能源融入网络成为可能,也使电动汽车融入当今社会。反过来,这也使得大幅减少温室气体(CO2)和成本,提高电力系统的可靠性成为可能。
